SC Homicide Suspect Hid In PA Basement, US Marshals Say

A man wanted on criminal homicide charges was caught in Western Pennsylvania, US Marshals announced on Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

Travis Burton was found hiding in the basement of a home in the 600 block of Romine Street, McKeesport, acting U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Pennsylvania, Phil Cornelious stated in the announcement. 

Burton is accused of shooting a 65-year-old man dead in a backyard near 2569 Gibbs Road Johns Island, South Carolina on Jan. 14, 2023, around 1 p.m., according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. He was also wanted on a firearms violation charge. 

Detectives arrested 26-year-old Deandre Jermol Major, "on a murder charge in connection with the Gibbs Road homicide. Major was already in custody in Beaufort County after an arrest earlier this week," the sheriff's office announced on Friday, Feb. 10, 2023. At the time of his arrest, they also said "additional arrests are possible" Burton was apparently the additional arrest they were hinting at. 

He has been held in the Allegheny County Jail where he is now waiting for extradition back to South Carolina.

An investigation into a tip led authorities to search the home where he was found, account to the announcement.

The investigation was conducted through "efforts between, U.S. Marshals Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force, U.S. Marshals Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force, and the McKeesport Police Department," as stated in the announcement.
